Report of IST-3 Meeting in Perugia, ITALY - Dec 2007 |
Stefano
Ricci, the IST-3 National Co-ordinator (with help from Maria Grazia Celani,
Enrico Righetti and Teresa Cantisani) organised a very successful meeting of the
Italian centres in the trial. About 30 people attended. There has been a
resurgence of interest in the trial in Italy, with several new centres now in
the process of joining: Genova, Modena, Foggia, Legnango, Peschiera, Verona,
Bologna, Reggio Emilia, Bari. An air strike meant that some people made long
journeys by car to get to the meeting. Mimmo Consoli and Giovanni Franco
travelled 700 Km by car from Vibo Valentia in Calabria in the far south of Italy
to be there!
Dr Stefano Ricci
Peter Sandercock presented the rationale for the trial, Maria Grazia, Lucia Guerra Silvia Cupella (from Citta Della Pieve) gave presentations on the nursing protocol and the forms to be completed. Maria Grazia was just about to do a live on-line demonstration of the 'practice' randomisation website, when Peter received a call on the IST-3 helpline. He then switched to the real website and the audience watched a real patient being randomised - a real 'coup de theatre'! There was a round of applause as the treatment allocation went up on the screen.
This was then followed by a lively discussion about a number of cases. The meeting closed with an excellent dinner.
Many thanks to Stefano and his team for an excellent meeting!
