Research overview

Dr. Bastin’s primary research interest is in the development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) acquisition methods and post-processing techniques and their application to the study of the pathophysiology of diseases of the human brain. Specific areas of interest include:

  • Diffusion tensor MRI
  • Dynamic susceptibility contrast perfusion MRI
  • Magnetization transfer MRI
  • Quantitative spin-lattice relaxation (T1) measurement
  • Numerical MRI signal modelling and simulation
  • Application to ischaemic stroke, brain tumours, ageing, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression

Dr Bastin has authored over 40 articles in leading peer-review journals. He currently supervises or co-supervises three PhD students and is a principal investigator or co-applicant on approximately £6M of grant funding.

Research direction

The major direction for the next five years will be to develop further quantitative methods for tracking major white matter fibre bundles in vivo from diffusion MRI data, and investigate the use of this method in understanding the pathophysiology of different neurological disorders.
